History
Archangel Michael and St Anthony Church in Melbourne contemplated
the idea of building a hostel for the senior citizens. A committee,
headed by Fr Mina Rizkalla, was
formed to oversee and execute the project, which was renamed "THE
COPTIC VILLAGE HOSTEL INC." The Committee consists of:
Michael Ramzi,
Naguib Bassily, Magdy Messiha, Naguib Saad, Wagih Aziz, Joseph Riad,
Fifi Ghabrial, Ibrahim Zaid, Nader Seifen.
After obtaining from the Federal Government
a grant of $1,340,000.00, the Committee purchased a large block of
land at Fountain Gate for the sum of $320,000, to construct a hostel
for the senior citizens. On February 23,1991, His Holiness Pope Shenouda
III accompanied by 4 Bishops and 11 priests visited and blessed the
site of the Village, signed the contract for the purchase of the property
and upon inspecting the land pointed to the stables and said "This
manger shall be converted to a church". The committee decided
to divide the land into two parts to accommodate the following:
- The
senior citizens hostel.
- The
Coptic village project.
The Senior
Citizens Hostel:
Nestled in a quiet court location, the Hostel is surrounded
by beautiful landscaped gardens. There are 30 rooms for permanent
residency, and 2 rooms for temporary residency available for elderly
persons whose families are away for a certain period and need to
be looked after until the family returns. The Hostel is managed
by a highly qualified personnel (headed by Mr Hany Sommbel) who
specialises in elderly care and the preparation of special meals
and diets. The building is divided into three wings, including lounge
rooms for TV viewing and reading. Each room has its own bathroom
and wardrobes and is fully and comfortably furnished. There is a
special library room for reading and contemplation.
There are various spiritual, recreational,
educational activities, and of course many outdoor picnics and outings.
The building also has special facilities to cater for the handicapped.
The kitchen is equipped with the most modern equipment to cater
for 60 residents at any one time. There is also outdoor settings
in addition to a sun-room. The Hostel offers independence, privacy,
and security in a pleasant Christian atmosphere. Assistance is available
24 hours a day in case of medical emergencies. This excellent
project was blessed and officially opened by His Holiness Pope Shenouda
III and the Minister for Primary Industries, Mr Simon Crean on Friday,
September 3, 1993.
