"The
First Coptic Monastary in Australia"
Directions
The Monastary is situated on a 100 Acres of land on Redburn
Lane, off Nagambie Rd, and Northern Highway about 125 Km north of
Melbourne.
History
Through the interest and generosity of three lay people, a parcel
of land (62 acres) was purchased in Heathcote, Victoria, in August
1983 to establish a Monastery dedicated to St Anthony the Father
of all monks. Under the pastoral care of Fr Daniel El Antouny and
the selfless efforts of Mr Mokhtar Fam, the long and difficult road
to construct Australia's first Coptic Monastery commenced. The first
liturgy celebrated on the grounds of the Monastery was in September
1986. From mid 1989, a monthly trip was organized where the divine
liturgy would be celebrated and a spiritually edifying day enjoyed.
By November 1989, the Retreat House which consists of sixteen dormitories
and a large Hall, was completed and it was officially, opened along
with laying the foundation stone of the Church by His Holiness Pope
Shenouda III. In February 1991, Pope Shenouda III visited the Monastery,
inspecting closely the building and forwarded a cheque for the sum
of $10,000 towards the completion of the Monastery. On September
4,1993, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III officially opened the Monastery
and consecrated the Church and delegates three monks to inhabit
the monastery: Fr Titus El Baramousy, Fr Polycarpos, Fr Youakim
El Baramousy
